Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Tuesday acknowledged concerns about what Robert Kennedy Jr.’s nomination as HHS secretary might mean for the U.S. food system, saying he wants to meet with him before any confirmation hearing.
“I’m willing to have a discussion with him and find out where he’s coming from,” Grassley told reporters Tuesday. “But I may have to spend a lot of time educating him about agriculture, and I’m willing to do that.”
Kennedy has promised to overhaul the U.S. food system, saying he wants to ban processed foods, certain pesticides, soybean products, and other common pieces of the current food supply chain as part of his push to “Make America Healthy Again.” Rural lawmakers acknowledge reforms are needed, but some worry Kennedy doesn’t grasp how disruptive an entire regime of new regulations would be for the food and agriculture sectors.
