GLP Spaces on X: Lab leak or wet market—How government officials and the media bungled the truth about the origins of SARS-CoV-2

More than five years after COVID-19 began its global rampage, the origins of the pandemic remain uncertain. An ongoing debate over where SARS-CoV-2 came from has pitted two competing hypothesis against one another: a natural zoonotic spillover and a lab leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in China. The zoonotic explanation, favored by many scientists, suggests the virus jumped from animals, likely bats, to humans, possibly through an intermediate host at a Wuhan wet market. In contrast, the lab leak hypothesis proposes that the virus accidentally escaped from a lab in Wuhan, where researchers were studying bat coronaviruses—sometimes absent sufficient safety protocols. Proponents of this view also point to what they see as critical gaps in the evidence cited to support the wet-market origin.

Initially dismissed as a conspiracy theory and still deemed less likely than a natural spillover by most experts, the lab leak idea had gained significant traction by 2021, leading to a White House investigation that June and eventual endorsements with “low” to “moderate” confidence from agencies like the CIA. A group of amateur investigators called DRASTIC has called for a deeper investigation into the lab leak hypothesis since 2020, uncovering documents that have raised suspicions about the Wuhan lab’s research practices and willingness to share records with the broader science community.

The public discussion about a lab-leak origin has been further complicated and convoluted by anti-vaccine activists who falsely claim the virus was deliberately engineered and released, fueling broader conspiracy narratives. These activists often intertwine the lab leak theory with anti-vaccine rhetoric, using it to erode trust in established medical science and important public health measures like vaccination.
