Artificial intelligence is transforming bioengineering and biomedicine. … The United States and China are locked in a race to develop AI, and on that front, the U.S. still leads. Its “AI stack” — from data centers to chips and frontier research — is, for the time being, more advanced than China’s.
But a tenuous lead in AI won’t translate into a meaningful advantage in the broader bioengineering field unless the U.S. addresses a whole slew of its other deficiencies. China’s “biotech stack” — from research to fabrication to testing — is far more integrated than that of the U.S., allowing China to innovate and commercialize much faster.
And losing the race would leave the U.S. dangerously dependent on its rival.
In the U.S., bringing a new drug from discovery to approval takes 10 to 15 years on average ….

Since 2015, Beijing’s National Medical Products Administration has rebuilt its regulatory system, aligning its standards with global norms and introducing expedited pathways that cut the review clock from roughly 200 working days to 130 for priority drugs, and to 70 for urgently needed therapies already approved abroad.
