Environmental scientist Margaret Karembu takes on common objections to GMO crops in this interview with Know Ideas Media founder Nick Saik. While wealthy, well-fed anti-biotech activists lobby to keep crop biotechnology out of Africa, the continent stands to gain tremendously from access to safe, environmentally sustainable biotech crops that could promote food security and economic growth, Karembu says. She and Saik also address the concern that genetic engineering is unnatural, an example of humans “playing god.”
Karembu is the Director of the ISAAA AfriCenter. She also serves as the chair of the Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB) Programming Committee, Kenya Chapter. Karembu holds a PhD in environmental science education and a master’s degree in education from Kenyatta University.
