The Grocery Manufacturers Association has called on the Food and Drug Administration to define the ‘natural’ claim on food labels as it to genetically modified food.
In a letter sent in early December, the GMA said that action from the FDA is needed to “stem further litigation over ‘natural’ claims on labels and state efforts to craft their own definitions.” State-by-state labeling laws would be inconsistent, the GMA argues. The GMA is also concerned that a “patchwork” of labels would “inevitably confuse consumers and impose unnecessary costs on the food industry.”
The GMA has also warned that it will file a petition in early 2014 to get the FDA to allow GM foods under the ‘natural’ definition.
