The fact is, the Trump administration spends a lot of time trying to please completely contradictory parts of its coalition: hawks and doves, for instance, or a MAGA base that wants to deport illegals, and the blue-collar businesses that hire them. Or, most recently: People who want to Make America Healthy Again by banning a nearly ubiquitous weedkiller, and the farmers who say they need it.

Glyphosate, marketed in the United States as Roundup, first entered the U.S. market in 1974; it has since become the most popular herbicide in America.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has repeatedly concluded that glyphosate is safe if used according to label directions, based on the numerous studies it has examined.

Meanwhile, the Make America Healthy Again movement is a geographically disparate coalition of kombucha drinkers and vaccine skeptics led by a man who was a Democrat until last summer. To paraphrase RFK: If the Americans of the MAHA movement fancy themselves superheroes, they’ve found themselves in a coalition with their own Lex Luthors—and the tension is ratcheting up.
