A research team said it has produced stratified retinal tissues from human embryonic stem cells for the first time in history.The results, achieved by a team of researchers from the Riken Center for Developmental Biology and Sumitomo Chemical Co., were published in the U.S. magazine Cell Stem Cell on Thursday. Yoshiki Sasai, group director at the center, said: “This is a great step forward to enable practical applications of regenerative medicine. The result can be used in the treatment of intractable eye diseases.”
