Slap “glyphosate-free” on a bag of oats and watch it fly off the shelf, even though the herbicide is barely used on the crop, writes Michelle Miller, aka the Farm Babe, for AgDaily. A former oat grower herself, Miller says she never met anyone who sprayed glyphosate on oats in the US, where it isn’t even approved for that use.
Tennessee oat grower Kary Robinson agrees. “It’s crazy to me to think that people would think that we spray glyphosate on oats,” he told Miller, adding that doing so would simply kill the crop.
Where the fear really comes from
The worry traces largely to Canada, where glyphosate is sometimes applied pre-harvest to dying plants, never as a growth aid, leaving only trace residues far below the EPA’s 30 parts-per-million safety limit. Viral “positive” test results, Miller notes, often stem from flawed methodology. University of Florida plant scientist Kevin Folta explains that the ELISA test such groups use was “validated mostly for water” and is prone to false positives from salts, lipids, and other compounds.
