There may be a day when Bayer Crop Science decides it needs to exit the glyphosate business, George Gough, director of stakeholder relations for Bayer Crop Science, told the annual meeting of the American Sugarbeet Growers Association. But there’s a long way to go before that decision would be made, he said.

Gough said the herbicide remained popular and generally uncontroversial until about 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer declared it a probable carcinogen. IARC is not a scientific organization and did no original studies. Other groups, including the World Health Organization and regulatory bodies across the globe, including the EPA, have not joined in IARC’s findings.
However, Gough explained that IARC’s finding was enough to get trial lawyers — notably including Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who now serves as Secretary of Health and Human Services — to start looking for clients to file lawsuits over glyphosate. …
