Elderly are increasingly befuddled by mass-produced AI health videos

A 68-year-old man in Gumi, South Korea, took a YouTube “doctor” at his word: “200g of blueberries has the same effect as blood pressure medication.” Doctor Lee Minsoo never existed,  reports Cho Baek-keun for The Chosun Daily — the white-coated physician was an AI fabrication. The man cut his dose, ate the berries, and later collapsed from dizziness.

The outlet’s review of the top 100 “senior health” videos on YouTube found 76 were AI-produced, and 70 featured fake AI physicians. Scaled across the roughly one million videos that search term returns, more than 760,000 factory-made health videos may exist.

The Data Backs Up the Danger

A Korean study published in npj Digital Medicine analyzed nearly 4,000 medical videos and found the more a video leaned on exaggeration and clickbait, the more views, likes and comments it earned, while higher-quality, accurate content predicted fewer daily views. Independent creators, who made 38% of videos, averaged roughly 675,000 views versus 78,000 views for videos created by public institutions—nearly nine times the reach, often espousing misleading and dangerous claims.
