Viewpoint: Despite growing acceptance of gene-edited crops, cloned meat still gives people ‘the ick’

After working with other government departments and conducting a review of the scientific literature, Health Canada had determined that food products made from cloned animals and their offspring are as safe and nutritious as food from traditionally bred animals.

However, a large number of Canadians apparently begged to differ.

Health Canada apparently got an earful during the consultation phase of its review and recently announced it was indefinitely pausing the proposed update based on the volume and nature of feedback from industry stakeholders as well as public pushback.

“Numerous opinion polls show that the majority of Americans do not want food from cloned animals and are opposed to this technology on moral or ethical grounds,” the Center for Food Safety from the United States says on its website.

Many North Americans, no matter how accepting they are of biotechnology in crop production, are more queasy when it comes to tinkering with animals, especially with those they are eventually going to eat.
