Industry group ‘resurrects’ USDA’s canceled organic food research program

Three months after the U.S. Department of Agriculture pulled the plug on a plan to establish a national organic promotion and research program funded by grower assessments, the Organic Trade Association is resurrecting the plan.

While many of the goals remain the same, the USDA is no longer involved and the association wants to create a voluntary payment program.

“The Organic Trade Association recognizes great demand for coordinated organic research and promotion, and the organic sector is ready to work together on innovative solutions that will have key benefits for organic,” Laura Batcha, CEO and executive director for the Organic Trade Association, said in the release.

In an e-mail to The Packer, Batcha said the voluntary program will operate outside of the oversight of the USDA. The USDA expressly forbids disparaging other commodities by the agency’s promotion boards, and Batcha said the voluntary program also will focus on the positive attributes of organic products, not negative messages about non-organic food.

Court blocks Monsanto subpoena of glyphosate documents from activist group Avaaz

Monsanto in Another Huge Lawsuit for Lying About Roundup Cancer Link

On September 6th, a New York judge blocked Monsanto’s attempt to subpoena documents from the political activist group Avaaz. The biotech firm requested the subpoena in February 2018 as part of a Missouri lawsuit alleging that its herbicide Roundup causes non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

According to Scott Partridge, Monsanto’s vice president for global strategy, the company suspected there was a “…. coordinated campaign between Avaaz and the plaintiff’s lawyers [to spread] misinformation about the safety of glyphosate ….” while Avaaz lobbied against glyphosate’s re-authorization in Europe in 2017.

Avaaz denied any connection to the attorneys in the Missouri case. “We have never spoken to the plaintiff’s lawyers,” Emma Ruby-Sachs, Avaaz’s deputy director, told the Guardian in February. “We didn’t even know this case existed until we got the subpoena. I’m 100% confident of that, as we had to look it up and it took a while to figure out what it was.” She added that handing over the documents to Monsanto would constitute a violation of the group’s right to privacy.

New York State judge Shlomo S. Hagler granted Avaaz’s petition to quash the subpoena on September 6th, ruling the documents Monsanto requested were “utterly irrelevant” to the lawsuit in Missouri.

Milena Canning can see steam rising from a coffee cup but not the cup. She can see her daughter’s ponytail swing from side to side, but she can’t see her daughter. Canning is blind, yet moving objects somehow find a way into her perception. Scientists studying her condition say it could reveal secrets about how humans process vision in general.

Canning was 29 when a stroke destroyed her entire occipital lobe, the brain region housing the visual system. The event left her sightless, but one day she saw a flash of light from a metallic gift bag next to her.

Canning is one of a handful of people who have been diagnosed with the “Riddoch phenomenon,” the ability to perceive motion while blind to other visual stimuli.

Scans of Canning’s head showed an apple-sized hole where the visual cortex should be. But the lesion apparently spared the brain’s motion-processing region, the middle temporal (MT) visual area. “All the credit [for Canning’s perception] must go to an intact MT,” says Beatrice de Gelder, a neuroscientist at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, who was not involved in the study.

Canning is an eager participant in the researchers’ ongoing study. “If I can help them understand the brain more,” she says, “I could understand why I’m seeing what I’m seeing.”

Diagnosing autism: Proposed revision of global diagnostic manual raises concerns

The proposed new version of the global manual for diagnosing medical conditions gets many things right about autism — but some items diverge from the manual’s American counterpart and are provoking concerns from scientists.

Specifically, the manual lists eight subcategories of autism and ignores some key traits of the condition, these scientists say.

The World Health Organization (WHO) released this latest version of the International Classification of Diseases, or ICD-11, on 18 June. The draft is open to comments before its formal adoption

Overall, its treatment of autism is similar to that of the American DSM-5, the current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, published in 2013. For example: Both manuals fold autism, Asperger syndrome and pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified into a single umbrella category called ‘autism spectrum disorder.’

However, the ICD-11 diverges from the DSM-5 in significant ways.

Among the most popular features of the DSM-5 is its prominent treatment of sensory abnormalities — such as over- or undersensitivity to sound and touch — among people with autism. The definition of autism in the ICD-11, by contrast, makes no mention of sensory abnormalities.

“Sensory issues may well be near universal in autism,” says Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom. “If true, we should count it as a core symptom of the umbrella category.”

Are pro-GMO scientists corrupted by money?

Do you watch “crime shows? It’s intrinsically satisfying to see the facts proven and the truth revealed. Phrases such as “unbiased evidence”, and “proven beyond a reasonable doubt” are appreciated and part of the modern psyche.

Many understand that reasoning in a criminal case, but refuse to apply the same reasoning to GMOs. The vast majority of the scientific community will attest to the safety of consuming GMOs, but only a little more than a third of the general populace agrees.

When confronted with the research data, rather than studying and verifying the credentials of the scientists, they would rather accuse them of being in cahoots with corporations that profit from GM products.

I also dismiss any research that that smells of a financial agenda. I look instead for independent research from groups with unassailable credentials …. I strive to find a consensus among the unbiased scientific groups genuinely motivated to ascertain the facts about food safety. They eat too, and so do their children, and I don’t believe money bends the needle on the moral compass of the majority of the world’s scientific community.

So, when I say that there is no evidence of negative health effects from eating GMOs, and someone starts sending me links that say differently, I say this. You haven’t dug deeply enough.

Viewpoint: When it comes to CRISPR crop regulations, Europe must trust its biotech experts

The latest ruling by the European Court of Justice requires that crops created using gene-editing techniques such as CRISPR must go through the same lengthy approval process as conventional genetically modified (GM) plants. This has surprised many scientists, who are concerned that it will complicate promising applications of gene editing.

As members of the European Food Safety Authority’s panel on GM organisms since its inception, we have witnessed a mounting distrust of scientific assessments. That has manifested with the approval of rules that demand a rigid analysis of GM plants. We need to reverse this trend, for example by acknowledging that approval of genome-edited plants calls for much less data than classic GM organisms, and by commanding greater respect for the work of scientific panels. This would promote scientifically sound risk analysis while complying with existing directives.

Medieval graves yield genetic clues about kinship of Germanic warrior family

A dozen lavish medieval graves holding the remains of 13 people have finally spilled their genetic secrets, now that researchers have constructed a family tree of the people buried there.

Researchers initially found the early medieval burials — which hold the bodies of 10 adults and three infants — in 1962 in the southern German city of Niederstotzingen. The contents of the graves dazzled archaeologists, who immediately got to work studying the ornate armor, bridle gear, jewelry and swords buried with the individuals. But they couldn’t figure out how these people (some of whom were warriors) were related.

Now, a new genetic analysis of eight of these individuals reveals that five of them were direct relatives, but the other three were not related at all.

It’s possible that some of these unrelated people were “adopted as children from another region to be trained as warriors, which was a common practice at the time,” the researchers wrote in the study, which was published online [September 5] in the journal Science Advances.

The results “prove once more that early medieval society was indeed fluid and adaptive,” [funerary archaeologist Christian] Meyer told Live Science in an email. “Every complex analysis that leads to significant new results should also make us re-evaluate pre-conceived notions about kinship, grave goods and overall burial rites.”

Did Canada overestimate the risks of neonicotinoid pesticides?

On Aug. 16, Health Canada’s Pest Management Regulatory Agency proposed to ban all outdoor uses of [the neonicotinoids] clothianidin and thiamethoxam …. because of an unacceptable risk to aquatic insects  ….

…. PMRA scientists concluded:

  • The threshold to protect 95 percent of all aquatic invertebrates from chronic exposure to clothianidin is 0.0015 ug/L, or 1.5 [parts per trillion]
[T]he U.S. [EPA] uses 50 [parts per trillion] as the acceptable, chronic exposure to the neonic.

“The PMRA chronic reference value for clothianidin of 1.5 [parts per trillion] … is more than an order of magnitude lower (more sensitive) than the US EPA’s unbound reference value of [50 parts per trillion],” the PMRA says ….

What is a part per trillion?

  • A 747 airplane can hold almost 50,000 gallons of fuel. One part per billion is about four drops of liquid mixed into the fuel …. One part per trillion would be about half a drop of oil in a super tanker carrying six million gallons of oil.

“In Bayer’s opinion, that is the critical issue,” said Paul Thiel, vice-president of innovation and public affairs with Bayer Crop Science in Canada. “The chronic endpoint value, 1.5 parts per trillion, is … overly conservative.”

Christy Morrissey of the University of Saskatchewan has come up with significantly higher thresholds for chronic risk to aquatic insects such as mayflies and midges. The PMRA said in its report that Morrissey’s number is 35 parts per trillion for neonic exposure.

In-body gene editing successful in first trial, targeting Hunter syndrome

A therapy that edits genes directly in the human body might be safe, suggest early findings from the first trial to test the approach.

Researchers from Sangamo Therapeutics in Richmond, California, designed enzymes to correct an error in the genome of people with a rare genetic disease called Hunter syndrome, who cannot break down some complex sugars. The scientists used a virus to deliver these gene-editing enzymes into the cells of patients.

Hunter syndrome is caused by mutations that disable an enzyme called iduronate-2-sulfatase (IDS), which is responsible for breaking down certain complex sugars in the body. When those sugars accumulate, they can damage organs including the lungs, heart and brain.

The Sangamo team looked for ways to permanently replace the enzyme. The company designed gene-editing enzymes called zinc finger nucleases to insert a healthy version of the gene into a region of the genome deemed to be safe. The researchers then used a virus to shuttle DNA that encodes the nuclease, and the healthy IDS gene into liver cells, where IDS is normally produced.

Two of the people in the Sangamo trial showed a decrease in urine levels of the sugars that IDS breaks down. The other two, who received a lower dose, saw no change. No patient report any serious adverse events linked to the therapy.

Artificial intelligence could predict where earthquake aftershocks will strike

A new artificial intelligence is turning its big brain to mapping earthquake aftershocks. Scientists trained an artificial neural network to study the spatial relationships between more than 130,000 main earthquakes and their aftershocks. In tests, the AI was much better at predicting the locations of aftershocks than traditional methods that many seismologists use.

Although it’s not possible to predict where and when an earthquake will happen, seismologists do know a few things about aftershocks. “We’ve known for a long time that they will cluster spatially and decay over time,” says geophysicist Susan Hough.

[F]ault orientations in the subsurface can be as complicated as a three-dimensional crazy quilt, and stresses can push on the faults from many different directions at once. Imagine a book sitting on a table: Shear stress pushes the book sideways, and might cause it to slide to the left or right. Normal stress pushes downward on the book, perpendicular to the table, so that it wouldn’t budge. Such a thorny computational problem may be tailor-made for a neural network.

Another question is whether a forecast system that used such an AI could leap into action quickly enough after a quake for its aftershock predictions to be helpful.

In the immediate aftermath of a big quake, such data wouldn’t be available for at least a day.

Newly-discovered microbes could save endangered plants from extinction

One fine Hawaiian day in 2015, Geoff Zahn and Anthony Amend set off on an eight-hour hike …. The two headed to the site where a patch of critically endangered Phyllostegia kaalaensis had been planted a few months earlier. What they found was dispiriting.

“All the plants were gone,” recalls Zahn, then a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The two ecologists found only the red flags placed at the site of each planting, plus a few dead stalks. “It was just like a graveyard,” Zahn says.

The plants, members of the mint family but without the menthol aroma, had most likely died of powdery mildew caused by Neoerysiphe galeopsidis.

[P]lants have their own microbiomes, the bacteria, fungi and other microorganisms living on and in the plants …. A single leaf hosts millions of microbes, sometimes hundreds of different types …. Plants acquire many of these microbes from the soil and air ….

Scientists like Zahn are investigating how these supportive communities might help endangered plants in the wild …. Scientists studying plant microbiomes have described numerous unfamiliar plant partners in recent decades. Those researchers say they’ve only scratched the surface of possibilities ….

“The last five years have seen an explosion in this,” says Dangl, who cofounded AgBiome, which soon plans to market a bacterial treatment that combats fungal diseases.

Can artificial intelligence give us a more efficient health care system?

To understand the benefits that artificial intelligence can bring to the world of human medicine, consider the case of Ayako Yamashita, a 60-year-old Japanese woman, whose condition befuddled doctors in 2015.

Yamashita was thought to be suffering from acute myeloid leukemia. But after several unsuccessful treatment attempts, her doctors decided to search for another answer to her condition. They turned to IBM’s Watson, an AI system capable of analyzing vast amounts of data.

The computer reviewed nearly 20 million previously-published oncological research studies and cross-referenced data points. Watson’s analysis suggested the woman had a rare form of leukemia not detected through conventional methods. This led to a change in treatment and doctors crediting Watson for saving  the woman’s life.

The analysis of such huge amount of data is next to impossible for a human mind, but it’s like a walk in a digital park for AI. And it shows what may be one of the valuable things that AI can do for us. It is “the most practical application in the field of medical and healthcare for artificial intelligence,” said Seiji Yamada, of the National Institute of Informatics and chairman of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence.

The global artificial intelligence market is expected to reach $19.47 billion by 2022, according to the research firm Allied Market Research. As AI is marking its presence, tech giants are working to capitalize on new opportunities. The healthcare sector is a natural fit, according to Sanjay Gupta, managing director, South Asia and Middle East for NICE, a technology firm based in Israel, in an interview with ETHealthworld:

Saving lives and time

Among Google’s many AI ventures is an effort to develop new products targeting the health sector. The company is focusing on applications for life preservation, preventive care and improving health care services.

The company plans to launch a trial in India to test an AI system that scans a person’s eyes to look for signs of diabetic retinopathy. The company aims to license the technology to clinics. The system already has proven itself adept at detecting high blood pressure, or risk of heart disease or stroke, according to a study published in early 2018.

“This may be a rapid way for people to screen for risk,” Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at Yale University who was not involved in the study, wrote in an email. “Diagnosis is about to get turbo-charged by technology. And one avenue is to empower people with rapid ways to get useful information about their health.”

Jeff Dean, the Chief at Google AI, outlined for Boss Magazine how this system will enable doctors to better diagnose and treat patients for a range of diseases. Moreover, this system will also track key events in the patient’s past (including hospital stays) to help doctors more effectively.

Improving service

Health care facilities are transforming themselves with the addition of AI to improve quality of service and patient experience. The Geisinger Health System has incorporated the Cognitive Clinical Success Machine, developed by Jvion. It’s designed to reduce avoidable readmissions associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Karen Murphy, executive vice president at Geisinger, said in an interview with Healthcare IT News that the system would improve outcomes, quality and patient experience.

The system asks nearly 50 questions regarding the health of a patient and how it can be changed. With each question, the system delivers an assessment of risks involved with each patient. Then it provides insights into the most efficient actions and interventions that can be taken to improve patient’s health.

Enhanced end-of-life care

Providing the right care at the end-of-life is essential to avoid painful experiences for patients. Moreover, excess care would result in piled up bills even though they are covered under insurance. AI advancements could be of great help to patients with an age of 65 years or older. According to the recent study published in the journal NPJ Digital Medicine, Researchers implemented AI to screen electronic health records along with notes taken by doctors for finding potential health risks. This included nearly 48 billion data points used in a deep learning model.

The AI analyzed the data and determined medical issues such as mortality rates, unplanned readmission and long hospital stays with an accuracy of 90 percent. In comparison to traditional predictive analysis models, the deep learning model provided 10 percent more accuracy and scalability. The system did not only analyze electronic records, but also took into account doctors’ notes and information on old charts stores as PDF files.

Saving money

Along with providing better services, AI can also help cut costs. The startup Optellum is working to commercialize an AI system that helps diagnose cancer through analysis of clumps of cells detected in scans. This system has shown success in early testing. The results suggest it could be capable of diagnosing nearly 4,000 lung cancer patients each year.

In an interview with Futurism, Timor Kadir, Chief Science & Technology Officer at Optellum, said the system could reduce costs in the healthcare industry by $13.5 billion if the US and Europe decide to use it. Moreover, Sir John Bell, chair of the UK’s Office for Strategic Coordination of Health Research, said: “There is about $2.97 billion spent on pathology services in the National Health Service. You may be able to reduce that by 50 percent.”

The herbicide glyphosate has been in use for over 40 years. It is non-selective (kills all plants), it is inexpensive and has extremely low toxicity. These attributes made it an important tool for municipalities, farmers, and homeowners. Use increased starting in 1996 with the advent of glyphosate-tolerant (marketed under the brand name “Roundup Ready”) crops, which have expanded in acreage ever since.

Embracing biotech crops and why Nigeria’s GMO fight is far from over

In July, Nigeria took a significant step down the biotech road by approving its first commercially available GMO crop, offering farmers access to two new soybean seeds, engineered to resist local pests. Farmers in that nation are hopeful the soybean approval will soon lead the way to other GMO options. The nation’s scientists are working on several other crops, including a promising cowpea variety in field trials.

But when examining Nigeria’s potential to step into an agricultural leadership role in the region, it’s important to consider what it took to get this far — as well as the forces that long opposed GMOs throughout that nation.

As in other regions where anti-GMO groups have opposed genetically engineered varieties of crops such as soybean, corn and cotton, critics tend to focus on alleged safety concerns for humans, animals and the environment.  Groups such as Health of the Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF) argue that the risks have not been adequately identified. Despite scientific consensus that currently available food derived from GM crops poses no greater risk to human health than conventional foods, these anti-GMO critics use a variety of fear-inducing tactics to frighten regulators, farmers and consumers. For example, there have been repeated tales by many people (especially from non-scientists) that GM foods are dangerous for human consumption and have resulted in death of a number of people across countries.

How do Anti-GMO advocacy groups work?

As in other nations where anti GMO groups have opposed the introduction of genetically engineered crops, critics operate by spreading false information about GM products and the technology. They argue that GMOs can cause cancer and other diseases. They publish false and misleading scientific data that sparks fear and concerns on the part of the general public. Among the other major anti-GM advocacy groups operating in Nigeria are: Friends of the Earth, GM Watch and Institute of Science in Society. Several of them joined together to condemn Nigeria’s decision to release the GM soybeans to farmers. They wrote:

We restate our stand that the so-called permits issued to Monsanto to introduce GMOs into Nigeria should be overturned and the Biosafety law itself should be repealed. We also call on the National Assembly to urgently investigate the process leading to the granting of the permit on Sunday, 1st May 2016 to assure Nigerians that we are not pawns and that Nigerians will not be used as guinea pigs in a commercial game to open Africa to toxic technologies.

One of the resonating questions that these advocates of traditional agriculture have continued to ask is: Are GMO creators playing God? They try to convince the public that genetic engineering is akin to tampering with nature. This is a message that often resonates with the religious members of the public .

The anti-GMO groups also argue that companies like Monsanto and Syngenta are agricultural evils. They fall back on well-publicized claims about Indian farmers being driven to suicide after the introduction of GMO cotton and Roundup herbicide. While it is true that large numbers of Indian farmers have killed themselves, the actual suicide rate is not particularly high when compared to other nations.

The suicide trend started in the 1980s — well before the 2002 introduction of GM seeds to that nation. Further, the rates of farmer suicides in India, particularly among men, have gone down since the introduction of GM cotton. Researchers point to a range of causes for that nation’s suicide trends, including a poor agriculture infrastructure, the use of non-traditional credit sources and crushing debt for farmers with little in the way of a safety net following crop failures.

Critics also refer to GMOs as “the Monsanto Poison.” Monsanto’s role in the creation of Agent Orange is another reason for the mistrust of the GMO initiative in Nigeria. Agent Orange was a defoliant formulation used by the U.S military during the Vietnam War to deprive insurgents of cover. GMO critics say Monsanto’s Agent Orange was also used in targeting food crops as part of a starvation campaign.

Are they influencing public opinion?

In Nigeria, surveys indicates that many members of the public are of the opinion that eating GM food is harmful, biotechnology is risky, and is a way of colonizing the black race. This is largely due to the negative influence of the activities of the anti-GMO advocacy groups.

Response to anti-GMO sentiment

In April 2018, various scientists and organizations including Biotechnology Society of Nigeria (BSN), All Farmers Association, Cornel Alliance for Science and National Biotechnology Development Agency (NABDA) gathered together in Abuja, Nigeria for a March for Science. This march was coordinated by the Open Forum of Agricultural Biotechnology, Nigeria chapter. This march hoped to help improve the mindset of people regarding GMOs. Those in support of GMO technology in Nigeria, one of whom is Nigeria’s prominent scientist, Dr. Adulrazak B. Ibrahim, emphasized the need for the application of this technology in the country.

Are they influencing politicians who are making decisions?

In its response to the growing controversy over GM food, the Nigerian Senate passed a Biosafety Bill in 2011. That bill was never signed into law. A new version of that bill is currently awaiting presidential ascent. Due to the reoccurring activities of anti-GMO advocacy groups, some politicians have been unwilling to express support for the technology. In a letter to the vice president dated May 5, 2016, a coalition of civil society groups led by Jackie Ikeotuonye and professor Chike Ogbonna, raised concerns over issuing licenses to Monsanto.

What are the chances of getting food crops approved?

In 2018, a non-governmental organization warned the Nigerian government against the proposed introduction of commercialized GM crops into the food system of the country. This summer, the deputy director of NABDA, Rose Gidado, reaffirmed the government’s plan to introduce GM cowpea in the market, but the project officer of HOMEF, Joyce Ebebeinwe, criticized this move. And while the concerns raised by anti GM groups may offer sparse scientific footing, they have succeeded in continuously slowing the progress of a more widespread GM crop adoption.

The way forward is to continuously educate members of the public with the right information. Several scientific facts exists that GM foods are safe. Such facts should be made easily accessible to the government and members of the public. Lawmakers and religious leaders should not be ignored in this fight for GMOs as they play significant role in influencing the public.  More public campaign should be organized by GM protagonists and advocates group.

New studies questioning safety of GMO corn ‘contain serious flaws,’ experts say

Two -omics studies on genetically modified maize and Roundup-fed rats, recently published in the journal Scientific Reports, contain serious flaws in the experimental design, methodology and interpretation of results ….

The first study …. claims that genetic transformation process caused metabolic disturbances in genetically modified (GM) NK603 Roundup-tolerant maize, questioning the compositional similarity of this cultivar to a non-GM control cultivar. The second study …. reports that exposure of rats to an ultra-low dose of the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup were found to cause …. changes allegedly indicative of liver dysfunction. Both reports are based on samples collected from an earlier two-year study

The authors seem to misinterpret the Substantial Equivalence concept [used to evaluate the safety of GMO food ingredients], which recognizes that differences between varieties will always be observed, providing a starting-point of the food safety evaluation rather than an end-point in itself. Any observed differences indicated by molecular profiling are not necessarily biologically meaningful in a health and safety context ….

Both GM crops and glyphosate are currently subjects of political discussion in the European Union. Since the accumulated scientific body of evidence can (and should) be used to guide policy decisions, it is imperative that the research is solid and indisputable.

Pinpointing the internal clock that helps us mark the passage of time

Manmade clocks may precisely measure time, but, from a human perspective, the passage of time is remarkably fluid. It drags when you’re doing your taxes but really does fly when you’re having fun. Isolate yourself from any markers of time (night and day, watches or clocks) and you will feel less time has passed than actually has, because under those circumstances, the brain condenses time.

How the brain fixes the timing of the events we experience depends on episodic memory. … Neuroscientists know the brain must have a kind of internal clock or pacemaker to help it track those experiences and record them as memories.

In a new paper in Nature, researchers at the Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience (KISN) in Norway report that they have pinpointed a collection of interconnected brain cells that provides this clock.

The results provide strong evidence that the function of this particular network of cells is to timestamp events that we experience and keep track of the order in which they happened, according to [researcher] Edvard Moser. “We have found an area with activity so strongly relating to the time of an event or experience, it may open up a whole new research field,” he said.

Scientists hunting Asian hornet—invasive ‘honey bee killer’ spotted in U.K.

An Asian hornet sighting has been confirmed in Cornwall, sparking a hunt for the honey bee killer’s nesting sites. The predatory species was spotted in the Fowey area, officials from the National Bee unit said. Inspectors have been carrying out surveillance and monitoring since, the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra) said.

It follows an earlier sighting in Lancashire earlier this year. It was first seen in Jersey in 2016, and has since been seen in north Devon.

Nicola Spence, from Defra, said a “well-established protocol” was in place. She said: “That’s why we are taking swift and robust action to locate and investigate any nests in the south Cornwall area following this confirmed sighting.

Asian hornet expert Prof Juliet Osborne, from the University of Exeter, said the sighting was “concerning”. She said: “This suggests that further sightings, particularly in the South West of the UK, are highly likely and we must all be vigilant.

Opioid pain killer without risk of addiction? It may be possible

The ultimate goal of pain medicine—a powerful painkiller with few to no side effects, such as dependence or overdose—is still elusive. But a team of researchers from the Wake Forest School of Medicine in North Carolina believe they’ve come closer to reaching it. Their latest study, published [August 29] in Science Translational Medicine, details an experimental opioid that seems capable of stopping pain in non-human primates, but without any signs of addiction.

The experimental drug, labeled AT121, affects the body differently than traditional opioids such as morphine.

These opioids relieve pain largely by activating a specific type of opioid receptor, known as the mu receptor. But we actually have three other types of opioid receptors, respectively called delta, kappa, and the more recently discovered nociception opioid peptide receptor (NOP).

NOP, in fact, has been shown to short-circuit our dependence on drugs such as heroin and alcohol.

In mild pain tests with rhesus monkeys, AT-121 was found to be 100 times as potent as morphine. And when the researchers let monkeys self-dose themselves with various opioids, including AT-121, they didn’t take the experimental drug any more than a placebo saline solution, suggesting that it wasn’t creating a high. Another test found that, even in high doses, AT-121 couldn’t cause classic overdose symptoms.

As Uganda debates GMO safety, its scientists boost food production in neighboring countries

When Dr. Geoffrey Arinaitwe returned home after earning his PhD in biotechnology in Belgium in 2005, Uganda seemed a promising place for young scientists.

The country was deliberately prioritizing science and technology — disciplines envisioned as a vehicle to facilitate its goal of shifting from a peasant to a middle-income economy.

It has been 13 years since he returned and dedicated the prime of his career to developing crop varieties aimed at thwarting famine. But none of the work done by …. biotech researchers has reached farmers, partly because …. the country can’t make a decision on a biosafety bill that would guide commercialization of genetically modified (GM) organisms ….

Arinaitwe noted that he and other scientists had worked to develop improved varieties of staple food crops so hungry, malnourished children in [Uganda] and other parts of …. Africa …. would have access to more nutritious food.

“Now we have the alternatives. But we cannot get them to farmers. And children continue to get malnourished,” [he] said ….

[T]he scientists are working with researchers outside of Uganda, in countries where biosafety laws are already in place, to advance the technology …. If Ugandan biotech researchers can’t have their work rolled out to farmers in their own country, they’re at least finding the rest of the world is more receptive.
